What is the MMI?

Developed by the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, the MMI (Multiple Mini Interview system) is a proven system for reliably assessing the soft skills of candidates in the academic, public, and corporate sectors.

How Does it Work in the Public Sector?

Prospecthr MMI provides a portal which accesses a large bank of pre-written scenarios and questions which have been developed and vetted by experts in the field.  Interviewers receive background information on the scenario, which assists them in challenging the applicant’s ideas or position on the situation described in the scenario.  The portal also provides an on-line MMI administration function which includes assigning applicants to stations, linking interviewers to their scenarios, as well as an online scoring system.

Applicants visit a series of interview stations each with a different scenario and a different interviewer.  The applicant is assessed by a number of attributes selected by the employer.  A successful candidate will be one who can address the presented scenario and deal with the challenges from the interviewer or the situation as it develops. Candidates are independently scored and ranked by each interviewer.

Within the public sector, the MMI has been used to efficiently assess the soft skill attributes of high volume front-line positions such as firefighters, paramedics, case managers and transit operators.  It has also been effectively used in the selection of high stakes positions such as senior advisors, project managers and people leaders.  With leadership character being the major driver of organizational culture, the MMI provides an effective way to assess for people leadership potential in a transparent succession management program.
